Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) har netop afsløret årets vindere af RIBA European Award, og belønnet Sorø Kunstmuseum, som et blandt i alt ni europæiske projekter med følgende begrundelse:
This deceptively simple, austere addition to an existing courtyard museum in the heart of an historic town is masterful in its restraint and accomplishment. The L-shaped plan creates two new courtyards, with the main gallery building mirroring the volume of the existing museum yet being deferential to it.
The new building is striking in its use of especially manufactured long brick shingles of warm earthen hues for both pitched roof and walls, laid in a continuous plane with no gutters. The corners, window frames and thresholds are made of tombac, a beautiful bronze alloy.
The interiors follow through with the same spare use of materials. The main gallery space is orientated north/south along its long dimension and the space makes full use of the pitched roof and top light.
RIBA Award har været uddelt siden 1966 og er en af de absolut mest anerkendte arkitekturpriser. Den gives for en fremragende og enestående arkitektonisk præstation, der – uanset byggeriets form, størrelse, budget og beliggenhed – sætter standard for god arkitektur.
Sorø Kunstmuseum kunne i november 2011 indvie Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekters nye tilbygning på i alt 1400 kvadratmeter. Tilbygningen er et markant og nyskabende teglstensbyggeri med et rustikt ydre og et lyst indre. Den særlige, hængende teglskal beklæder såvel mure som tag og kan læses som en nytolkning af det arketypiske murede hus. Indvendigt er byggeriet en sanselig oplevelse med fine detaljer og med fokus på materialerne.
